STRIVE Update
Tony gave a brief update on the STRIVE (Students Taking Renewed Interest in Education) program at Lakeville North & Lakeville South High Schools.  The program involves 12 Rotarians volunteers and 32 students.

STRIVE is a program for high school seniors who have faced some academic challenges, but want to make the most of their last year of high school. Students who choose to participate in STRIVE are matched with an adult mentor from Lakeville Rotary Club. Mentors are not tutors, but are there to offer support, encouragement and assistance. Students and mentors meet once a month for about 50 minutes during the school day and talk about how school is going and what their plans are for the future. Meetings also include presentations on topics relevant to life after high school – college, careers, finances, etc. The goal is for students to improve their grades and earn a possible scholarship award.

Rotary Volunteers:
Lakeville North - Mark Booth, Phil Bruneau, Kathy Cleveland, Scott Miller, Mark Priore, Chris Casey
Lakeville South -Jeff Kohlnhofer, Rich Henderson, Ken Wentworth, Judy Keliher, Jeff Long, Emily Williams

STRIVE Coordinator: Tony Steel

The students and mentors have completed three meetings and on November 30th Tony and the students went on their first of three college visits to Minnesota State, Mankato Campus.
The next meeting will be held on January 9, 2018. Speaker Glenn Starfield, topic "How to Get a Job."

Rotary Students of the Month-December 2017
DECEMBER 2017 ROTARY STUDENTS OF THE MONTH

Each month of the school year, the Lakeville Rotary Club recognizes students of the senior class who demonstrate “Service Above Self”.

Rachel Emerson, Gianna Rucki
For the month of December Rachel Emerson will be recognized as the Lakeville South Rotary Student of the Month.

Rachel’s parents are Jeff and Patricia Emerson and her Dean is Shaun Murphy.  During her time at Lakeville South High School, Rachel has demonstrated a work ethic that is seldom matched by fellow students. While many seniors are taking a lighter load their last year of high school, Rachel has enrolled in four AP classes and one honors course. In addition, she has a 4.33 GPA and scored a 34 on her ACT.

Rachel is one of those unique students who can partake in many school activities and able to succeed with them all. She is the captain of our cross-country team and a state tournament participant. In addition, she is a leader in our Youth in Government Club, Faith Club, Cougars Leading Cougars, Key Club, and HOSA. As a volunteer, Rachel has participated in a mission trip to Haiti, been a youth group leader, has read to elementary students, and volunteers at her church.

Rachel is an outstanding individual and she is most deserving of being this month’s Rotary Student of the Month.

Lakeville North will recognize Gianna Rucki  as the December Student of the Month.

Gianna’s father is David Rucki and her Dean is Holly Standke.

Gianna maintains a rigorous high school schedule including college-level classes at Normandale Community College.  Gianna’s academics, character, leadership and extra-curricular commitments were recognized as she was the winner of the “Distinguished Young Women of Minnesota” scholarship for the class of 2018.

Gianna is a member of DECA club and student council at Lakeville North High School. She also is a member of the Nordic Ski Team and Student Council.  She is in Key Club, Faith Club, Spanish Club and on the Bowling Team.  Gianna volunteers for the Lakeville Yellow Ribbon, Feed My Starving Children and Adopt-A-Highway Clean up.
