In honor of me turning the same number as the distance of a marathon, I am going to run 26.2 miles the weekend of my 26th birthday. Who is crazy enough to do that, in the DEAD OF WINTER?? Well, because I love these kids so much, I am! You may ask, there is a marathon on your birthday?! Well, not exactly. My plan is to run a loop in Minneapolis along the Mississippi River. My heart beats for these kiddos in Africa and I would love nothing more than to run for them as a way to celebrate my birthday! BUT, I need YOUR HELP! My hope is to help 100 kiddos gain access to CLEAN WATER for life! Please consider helping me raise $5,000 dollars by January 25th!

Tom's Big Ride
Sep. 17, 2015
Yes, there really is a Tom, as in Tom Mork, a banker in Lakeville, MN, and yes, there really was a Big Ride, as in 2,150 miles…the length of the Mississippi River from the Gulf of Mexico to Lake Itasca in northern Minnesota that was completed in August, 2015. The larger question, and the one most likely on your mind, is…why? The simple answer to that question is that Tom has a story to tell about how he has struggled to deal with his daughter’s bipolar diagnosis of several years ago. It hasn’t always been pretty, and before, during, and after the ride, he’s told his story…replete with ignorance, despair, bewilderment, humor, and yes…hope. He wants to help other parents, and dads in particular, avoid the mistakes that he made. During the ride, Tom and his fellow riders increased awareness for mental health issues and raised money to support the good work that the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) has been doing for years. And they had more than their fair share of adventure along the way. But mostly, they spread a message of hope for people who daily deal with mental health challenges and for their families, who are all too often also confused and broken by this misunderstood and stigmatized disease. |

Rotary District 5960
Oct. 08, 2015
My Fellow Rotarians, Here we are in 2015-2016 and another Rotary Year. What will be important about this Rotary Year? What will we remember? President Elect Ravi Ravindran tells us in his Theme: “Be A Gift to the World.” He further tells us that each Rotarian is unique with special talents and gifts that need to be shared. Also, he states: “There are certain moments in one’s life that are so pivotal, so transformative, that they become the milestones by which all of our subsequent experiences are measured.” Is this true for you? Is there a Rotary experience that changed your life? Rotarians are special people who share a compelling vision to make a difference in the world. Every Rotarian has a unique gift to be shared. Every Rotarian has at some point decided they want to give back and share their expertise. Many Rotarians I have met have a deep sense of finding a purpose for their life. In Rotary we are challenged to do just that. This is the year to move Rotary forward by using our unlimited expertise and desire to find a purpose. This is our year and this is our time. Our #1 Priority in Rotary is to Eradicate Polio. The #2 Priority is to move “Rotary Forward” by offering others the opportunity to become members and to bring their expertise to the task of creating a world free of illiteracy, hunger, and violence, as well as to provide safe water, healthcare and shelter. As we look at the theme for this year, be a GIFT to the World, we have the opportunity to look within ourselves and create something so compelling that it will change the world. As we express ourselves and do good work in our communities and the world, the gifts will return to us in abundance. With the current Rotary structure and the resolve to eradicate polio, we have the opportunity to change the world. We have a wide base and are in numerous communities throughout the world. By our connections with others, we will develop conversations that will empower people to maintain a sense of dignity and hope. We are common people doing extraordinary things. This year will not end on June 30, 2016. Rather, the ideas and opportunities will live on for many years if we do what is necessary to keep Rotary alive and vibrant in our communities and in the world. |

Iringa Hope
Oct. 29, 2015
Iringa Hope is a US, non-profit corporation dedicated to raising the standard of living in rural Tanzania through small loans to farmers and shopkeepers. Rural Tanzania is one of the poorest regions in the world. Villagers are generally subsistence farmers or small shop keepers. There is no electricity. Water has to be carried to each house from a nearby stream or well. the soil is poor. Farm work is all manual labor done with a few crude tools. The founders of Iringa Hope got started in 2005 when the Lutheran Diocesse in Iringa expressed an interest in micro-finance. They started organizing Savings and Credit Cooperative Societies, SACCOS, in rural villages. Iringa Hope provided the capital to get each SACCOS started. Each SACCOS has between 40 and 70 members. They elect the officers who in turn approve small loans to members and manage the SACCOS. The Loans are between $150 and $300. Training and oversight is handled through the Micro-Finance Institute at the University of Iringa in Iringa. Close coordination with the Agricultural Institute at Tumaini helps villages improve their farming practices. and have a term of 3 to 6 months. The loans are for income producing activities. They are typically used to buy seed and fertilizer or to purchase goods for resale in small shops.

The Champion's Code
Nov. 12, 2015
“THE CHAMPION’S CODE: LIFE LESSONS OF ETHICS AND ACCOUNTABILITY FROM THE SPORTS WORLD TO THE BUSINESS WORLD”Ever wonder why certain teams are SUCCESSFUL whereas others aren’t? Ross explains WHY — in an engaging and visually entertaining style that’s designed to improve YOUR organization’s productivity, morale and bottom-line profitability... The best-selling author of nearly 50 sports books, Ross Bernstein is an award-winning business speaker who helps companies and organizations think and act more like CHAMPIONS. Ross and his books have been featured on thousands of television and radio programs over the past 20 years, including CNN, MSNBC, CBS This Morning, FOX News, ESPN, NPR, and the CBC, as well as in the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, L.A. Times, USA Today, and Maxim Magazine. Ross’ signature program, “The Champion’s Code: Life Lessons of Ethics & Accountability from the Sports World to the Business World,” is based on more than six years of research that resulted in two critically acclaimed series of sports-business books. The first examines how and why certain teams win world championships; while the other chronicles the unwritten and unspoken rules in the world of sports, or “codes” as they are known, which explores the fine line between cheating and gamesmanship — and the consequences involved when that line is crossed. Ross interviewed more than 1,000 professional athletes and coaches for the six books and along the way he saw some fascinating patterns, metrics and trends develop among certain individuals who possessed a very unique DNA. For these unique individuals, or “champions,” it wasn’t always about winning, it was about following their moral compass in order to play the game the right way — with respect and integrity — in order to achieve success. In his presentation, Ross identifies upwards of 100 unique characteristics and traits that are common among champions, which he then ties into poignant life lessons and inspirational stories that relate back to his client’s event theme and desired learner outcomes. Based largely on the “Good to Great” ideology of how the best companies are able to separate themselves from the rest of the pack through dynamic leadership and extraordinary customer service, Ross’ program reinforces the concept that individuals win games, but TEAMS win championships. Momentum, roles, buy-in, motivation, consistency, sacrifice, trust, chemistry, work-ethic, innovation, karma, and being humble — they’re all a part of what it takes to become the best of the best — a champion both on and off the field. So... who are the champions in your organization? Let Ross customize a keynote (from one to four hours) for your next annual conference, corporate event, or sales meeting — his passion and energy is contagious and he’d LOVE to be a member of YOUR team for the day! |
